Wrinkle Reduction

Botox®

Botox® (botulinum toxin type A) is a non-surgical injectable treatment used to temporarily reduce facial wrinkles and fine lines. It works by blocking nerve signals to specific facial muscles, preventing them from contracting. As the muscles relax, the overlying skin smooths out, creating a softer, more youthful appearance.

Common treatment areas include the forehead lines, frown (glabellar) lines, and crow’s feet around the eyes. Results typically appear within 3–7 days, last about 3–4 months, and gradually wear off as muscle activity returns.

The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and requires no downtime, making it a popular option for wrinkle prevention and facial rejuvenation. Most treatment appointments are for 30 minutes.

Botox® – FAQs

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In small, controlled doses, it’s used medically and cosmetically to relax specific muscles and smooth wrinkles.

How does Botox® work?

Botox® works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that signals muscles to contract. When these muscles relax, the overlying skin becomes smoother and lines soften or disappear.

How will Botox® improve the way I look?

By relaxing wrinkle-causing facial muscles, Botox® helps create a fresher, more rested and youthful appearance without changing facial structure or expression. It softens existing lines and helps prevent new ones from forming.

What is the overall effect of Botox®?

The overall effect is a natural, smoother appearance with reduced forehead creases, frown lines, and crow’s feet. The face retains movement, but harsh or tired-looking lines are diminished.

What is the best age to have Botox®?

There’s no specific “best” age—it depends on individual needs. Many people begin Botox® in their late 20s to 30s as a preventive measure, while others start later to soften established lines.

Which areas of the face does Botox® treat?

Most commonly treated areas include:

  • Forehead lines (horizontal lines)
  • Glabellar frown lines (between the brows)
  • Crow’s feet

It can also be used around the mouth, chin, and neck.

What else can be treated with Botox®?

Beyond cosmetic use, Botox® is also used to treat:

  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Jaw clenching and teeth grinding
  • Migraine prevention
  • Neck muscle spasms
  • Facial asymmetry
What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin protein that, in minute and purified quantities, safely and temporarily blocks nerve impulses to targeted muscles. There are several brands—Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®—all using the same active principle.

What’s involved in Botox® treatment?

Treatment involves a series of tiny injections delivered with a fine needle into specific facial muscles. The procedure usually takes 10–15 minutes, with minimal discomfort and no downtime. Normal activities can be resumed immediately.

How long does the Botox® effect last?

Results begin to appear within 3–7 days, peak at around 2 weeks, and last approximately 3–4 months. Duration may vary depending on the area treated, muscle activity, and metabolism.

How often is Botox® treatment repeated?

Most patients repeat treatment every 3–4 months to maintain results. Over time, as muscles adapt, intervals may lengthen.

Is Botox® safe?

Botox® is very safe. It has been used for over 20 years and has a strong safety record in both medical and aesthetic practice.

What about Botox® side effects?

Side effects are generally mild and temporary. They can include slight redness, swelling, or bruising at injection sites. Rarely, temporary drooping of a brow or eyelid can occur but resolves as the effect wears off.

What does Botox® cost?

Cost varies by clinic, practitioner, and treatment area. In New Zealand, prices typically range from $14–$20 per unit, with total treatment costs averaging $250–$650 depending on the number of areas treated.

Volume & Shape

Lip Fillers

Lip fillers are hyaluronic acid–based injectables designed to enhance the volume, shape, and definition of the lips. Juvederm® uses a smooth, gel-like form of hyaluronic acid that integrates naturally into the tissue, giving the lips a soft, hydrated, and natural-looking result.

Treatment takes around 15–20 minutes, with immediate improvement. Mild swelling or bruising may occur for 24–48 hours. Results typically last 9–12 months.

Juvederm® contains lignocaine, making the procedure comfortable, and because it’s hyaluronic acid–based, it can be reversed with Hyalase if adjustments are needed.

Profhilo®

Profhilo® is an injectable form of high concentration hyaluronic acid. Unlike Dermal Fillers, it doesn’t add volume or change facial shape. Instead, it spreads evenly through the skin to deeply hydrate, improve elasticity, and stimulate collagen and elastin production.

It is primarily used on the face, neck, and hands to treat skin that looks dull, crepey, or lax. The treatment involves a series of small injections, usually 10 points on the face, with minimal downtime.

A standard course is two sessions, 4 weeks apart. Results develop gradually over 4–8 weeks, giving the skin a firmer, plumper, and more luminous appearance. Effects typically last 6–9 months.

Profhilo – FAQs

How long does Profhilo take to work?

Profhilo is a two-session treatment, with each session spaced 30 days apart. Results are not immediate because the product works by stimulating your own collagen and elastin production. Over the 30 days following each session, the skin becomes firmer, smoother, and more hydrated. Most people notice improvement after the first session, but full results are seen 4–8 weeks after the second treatment.

What will I look like after the Profhilo treatment?

There is no downtime. Immediately after treatment, small raised bumps—similar to insect bites—can appear at each injection point. These are normal and usually settle within 4–24 hours.

Is Profhilo safe?

Yes. Profhilo was launched in 2015 in Italy and has been used safely worldwide ever since. More than 150,000 treatments have been performed with no significant adverse reactions reported. It is highly biocompatible because it is made from pure, natural hyaluronic acid and stabilised without chemical cross-linking agents.

Correction

Hyalase

Hyalase is hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. It is used to dissolve dermal fillers and is usually used for overfilled areas after filler injections, asymmetry, irregularities, lumps, or nodules.

Hyalase takes about 30–60 minutes to work, with peak effect at 24–48 hours. The filler may continue to break down for several days.

On rare occasions, Hyalase may be used if there is accidental intravascular injection of filler.
